Responses Panel

Use the Responses panel to create responses for an optimization.

Location: Analysis page > Optimization panel
Note: Only available in the OptiStruct solver interface.

All constraint functions and the objective function in an optimization problem must refer to responses.

Panel Options

Option Action
response = Specify a name for the response (maximum of 8 characters) if creating a new response; otherwise, double-click this button to select an existing response.
response type / dsysid Choose between specifying a response type or a dsysid.
response type
Define additional characteristics.
dsysid
Specify an ID.
response type switch Select the response type.
Note: Available when response type is selected.
mass, massfrac, volume, volumefrac, cog, inertia, compliance or beadfrac
Choose either total or by entity (or, where available, sum or combined).
For by entity, sum or combined select the desired entities.
static displacement
Use the nodes selector to select the desired nodes.
Enable the numbers checkbox to display the IDs of the selected nodes.
Select the degree-of-freedom for the response definition, or choose total disp or total rotation.
frequency, buckling
Specify the number of the mode for the response definition.
static stress, static strain, static force
Select the desired entities (elems, comps or props) to include in the response definition.
When elements are selected, enable the numbers checkbox to display the IDs of the selected elements.
When comps or props are selected, under the excluding: heading choose individual elements to exclude from the response definition.
Depending on the nature of the response type and the elements, components or properties selected, additional arguments need to be defined indicating the type (von mises, normal, and so on) and location (z1, point 1, end A, and so on) of the response.
composite stress, composite strain, composite failure
Select the desired entities (elems or comps) to include in the response definition.
When elements are selected, enable the numbers checkbox to display the IDs of the selected elements.
When comps are selected, under the excluding: heading choose individual elements to exclude from the response definition.
Depending on the nature of the response type selected, additional arguments need to be defined (normal 1, hill, and so on).
Choose from all plies, ply number =, and global ply number = (for PCOMPG property).
If ply number = or global ply number = is selected, specify the ply number for the response definition.
frf displacement, frf velocity, frf acceleration
Use the nodes selector to select the desired nodes.
Enable the numbers checkbox to display the IDs of the selected nodes.
Select the degree-of-freedom for the response definition.
Choose from real, imaginary, phase and magnitude.
Choose from all freq, freq =, sum, avg, ssq, rss, max, min, avgabs, maxabs, minabs, and sumabs.
If freq = is selected, specify the desired frequency.
frf stress, frf strain, frf force
Select the desired entities (elems, comps or props) to include in the response definition.
When elements are selected, enable the numbers checkbox to display the IDs of the selected elements.
When comps or props are selected, under the excluding: heading choose individual elements to exclude from the response definition.
Depending on the nature of the response type and the elements, components or properties selected, additional arguments need to be defined indicating the type (von mises, normal, and so on) and location (z1, point 1, end A, and so on) of the response.
Choose from real, imaginary, phase and magnitude.
Choose from all freq, freq =, sum, avg, ssq, rss, max, min, avgabs, maxabs, minabs, and sumabs.
If freq = is selected, specify the desired frequency.
function
Choose from dequation =, sum, avg, ssq, rss, max, min, avgabs, maxabs, minabs, and sumabs.
If dequation = is selected, click it and select the dequation definition to be used.
Click edit and enable the checkboxes of the variable(s) to use in the function.
Note: RESPONSES and RESPONSES_BY_LOADSTEP cannot be used in the same function response.
Specify the number of each enabled variable type that will be referenced in the function response.
Note: If a dequation is used in the definition of a function response the order of the variables on the left-hand side of the dequation definition must match the sequence in which they are listed on the DRESP2 card image, that is, any TABLE_ENTRIES references must come before RESPONSES references.
Select the variables by clicking the relevant yellow buttons that appear in the card image.
weighted comp
Use the loadsteps selector to select and weight the loadsteps to be used in the weighted comp response.
weighted freq
Select and weight the mode numbers to be used in the weighted freq response.
compliance index
Use the loadsteps selector to select and weight the loadsteps to be used in the compliance index response.
Select and weight the mode numbers to be used in the compliance index response.
If desired, toggle autonorm to norm = and enter the normalization factor.
