Creating the Cooling Circuit

Cooling circuits in the mold are made using of one of the following five elements:

Channel
Bubbler
Baffle
Thermal pin
Hose

Details about these elements can be found in the Moldflow users manual. The functionality of this macro is similar to that of the feed system macro, however, it is simpler because cooling circuit elements do not allow taper. The macro creates property cards for the selected beam elements that make the cooling circuit.

The following options are available in the Create Cooling Circuits dialog:

Option

Description

Element type

One of the five cooling elements. Channel, Bubbler, Baffle, Thermal pin, or Hose.

Shape

Cross-sectional shape of the element. Valid values depend on the element type.

HTE

Heat transfer effectiveness. This value is automatically set to 0 (internally) for Hose (Hose element does not participate in heat transfer). Refer to the Moldflow manual for details about this parameter.

Roughness

Surface roughness. This becomes important only if the flow is in turbulent regime.

Diamter

Element size. Entries depend on the choice of element type.

It is best to design the cooling circuit using lines and then use the Line Mesh panel (click Beams under Generate Mesh).

Assign properties to different segments of the circuit.  The circuit will also draw a surface depicting the shape (approximately) of the element.  This is done to give an idea of the size of the circuit and it is approximate for shapes such as U-shape and Trapezoidal.

Editing Feed System Property Cards

Click Edit Property Card to select a property card to edit. The property’s name and type appear in a popup dialog. Click Update and the property’s card image opens for editing in the main menu area, where you can change the values in the fields for that property.

Editing Feed System Element Data

Click Edit Element Data to select an element whose property card you want to edit. Once you select an element, the associated property’s name and type appear in a popup dialog. Click Update and the property’s card image opens for editing in the main menu area, where you can change the values in the fields for that property.

How Do I…

expand-green-10Create a cooling circuit:
1.Select the desired properties in the GUI.
2.Click Create to assign the properties to elements.
3.Select the elements. Select only 1-D rod elements.
4.Click proceed.
Property card(s) are created based on the data entered and assigned to the selected element.
