Altair Virtual Wind Tunnel for ultraFluidX 2021.2 Release Notes


Virtual Wind Tunnel 2021.2 delivers expanded feature support for ultraFluidX, new options for accessing documentation and python based automation capabilities. Highlights of this release include:
  • Turbulence source support
  • Python based automation
  • Web based documentation

New Features

Turbulence Sources
Use this new feature to fine-tune the turbulence levels introduced into the simulation. This is especially important at the nose of a car where it can affect the total drag characteristics. It’s often paired with a mesh control to capture the tiny vortices. The Turbulence Source tool makes it easy to specify the plane where turbulence is generated and couples it with a mesh control in the same interface.
Python Automation
Virtual Wind Tunnel can now be invoked from the command line and directed to import/export a model and template file. This is a powerful feature for batch runs and allows you to run Virtual Wind Tunnel without user interaction through the GUI. More functionality and customizability of inputs will be added in the next release.

Use this feature to download the online help and install it locally on your computer.
New File Extension
The VWT database is now saved as a .vwt file by default. The file is interchangeable with .stmod files.


Improved Defaults
Defaults for average window size and outputs have been updated to closely match user expectations.
The automatic report generation utility now supports clipping parts with a box_clip option.
The ultraFluidX user guide has been incorporated into the online Help.

Resolved Issues

  • Application no longer crashes when loading certain .stmod and .xml files.
  • Duplicate faces are no longer created upon saving or exporting the model as an .stl file.
  • Monitoring surface variables are now written inside the <output_variables> xml tag.
  • Multiple part references are no longer created in the .xml file.
  • Wall model settings on parts are now saved.
  • Shrinkwrapped parts now obey the display style.
  • Boolean operation on .stl and .nas models no longer cause a crash.
  • Undo/redo operations on part type assignment now work correctly.
