The Materials panel allows you to specify the properties of the metal to be formed.  For the stress strain curve, you can either supply a set of data points or the values for the parameters used in the Krupkowski-Swift hardening law.  The altair_mat.db file, located in the bin directory, is a library of materials commonly used in stamping.  All the relevant properties for each material are included in this file.  You can also create new material libraries in your directory that can be accessed from any HyperForm model file.  Select Materials from the Setup menu to display this panel.

Strain hardening is modeled using the Krupkowski-Swift law:

K-S-law

Planar anisotropy is modeled using directional Lankford coefficients, Lankford. An average r value is determined from these coefficients using the formula:  r= [r0 + 2r45 + r90]/4.  Normal anisotropy of the material is modeled using an average plastic strain ratio, r.

r0 = X axis

r90 = Y axis

It is suggested to rotate your part in order to make the rolling direction (r0) coincident with the X axis.

Some material properties can be calculated from other material property values. Those properties are indicated on the panel with an asterisk (*).

Note:The material characteristics are dependent on the unit of length and force chosen for the model.  The material database given with HyperForm is consistent with models where length is expressed in millimeters (mm) and force is expressed in newtons (N).

How do I...

expand-green-10Create a new material using parameters
1.Select the create subpanel.
2.Click material: and enter a new name for the new material.
3.Toggle to w/o curve.
4.Enter the values for the material properties.

If the values of K, TS, YS, or e0 are not available, enter 0 in the field(s) and follow the Calculate values for material properties procedure. Properties that can be calculated are indicated with an asterisk (*) on the panel.

5.Click the right-most create.

This material becomes part of this HyperForm model file.

expand-green-10Create a new material using stress strain curve data
1.Select the create subpanel.
2.Click material: and enter a new name for the new material.
3.Toggle to w/curve.
4.Click curves.
5.Fill the values of strain and stress data using the internal subpanel.  To read the curve data from a file, choose the external subpanel and browse to the file.

Note:  The first point in the stress-strain curve must be (0,0)

6.Specify the name of the curve and click create.
7.Click Display to plot the curve.
8.Click return to get back to the Materials panel.
9.Click update to associate the hardening curve with the material created in Step 1.

expand-green-10Update an existing material
1.Select the create subpanel.
2.Click material: and enter the material to be updated.
3.Enter new values for Yield Stress (YS), K2, E, r, n, and E02.
4.Click Update.

The material is updated.  If the values for K2 and E02 are unavailable, the calculate Second function allows you to calculate those quantities.

expand-green-10Calculate values for material properties
1.Select the calculate subpanel.
2.Type values for E, n, nu, r0, r45, and r90. The values for K2, TS, YS, and E02 can be calculated. The minimum required input parameters are listed in the following table:

To calculate:

You must specify:

K2

E02, plus TS or YS

TS

E02, plus K2 or YS

YS

E02, plus K2 or TS

E02

YS, plus K2 or TS

3.Type 0.0 in the field(s) you are calculating.
4.Click calculate.

HyperForm automatically calculates the material property.

expand-green-10Review a material in an existing material library
1.Select the library subpanel.
2.Click file = and select the material library file from your directory.

By default, the file = field is set to altair_mat.db.

3.Click load under Materials in file to make the library file available.
4.Select the create subpanel.
5.Click Review and select the material to be reviewed from the list.

The values corresponding to the picked material are now displayed in the create subpanel.

expand-green-10Retrieve a material from an existing material library
1.Select the library subpanel.
2.Click file = and select the material library file from your directory.

By default, the file = field is set to altair_mat.db.

3.Click load under Materials in file to make the library file available.
4.Select the specific material you want to retrieve.
5.Use the up and down buttons to scroll through the loaded material library.
6.Click >> to place it in memory.

This makes it one of the materials for the current HyperForm model file.

expand-green-10Create a new material library
1.Select the library subpanel.
2.Click file = and enter a name for the new material library file.
3.Click Reset under Materials in file to clear the column of existing information.
4.Click the specific material to be added from Materials in memory to the new library file.
5.Click << to add this material to the new library file.
6.Click Save to save the new file to your directory.
