Use the Point Edit panel to perform many point-specific geometry cleanup tasks.

Cleaning up a model’s geometry can be very helpful in creating a higher-quality mesh; for example, two points very close to each other might result in a distorted quad element between them, but by making them equivalent (so that they are treated as a single point when meshing) the automesher can instead use a well-formed triangular element.

Options available on this panel include adding, suppressing, replacing, and releasing points.  You can also project points to other entities.  The panel includes a separate subpanel for each of these types of editing.

Subpanels and Input

The Point Edit panel contains the following subpanels and command buttons:

expand-green-10Add

Use the Add subpanel to add new points to the model geometry.

Panel Inputs

Input

Action

at cursor: point

Click the model in the graphics area where you wish a new point to be placed.  Points can only be added to existing geometry (such as surfaces or lines).

on edge: edge

Used to add points along a specific edge. Select the desired edge in the graphics area.

# of pts

Number of points to be created between the end points of the edge.

on surfs: surfs

Used to add points to a surface. Pick the desired surface in the graphics area.

nodes / points

Click the desired nodes on the surface in the graphics area, or use the extended entity selection menu.

Points will be added to the surface at the same location as the selected nodes.

cleanup tol

Points or nodes farther than this value from the surface will not be added to the surface.

expand-green-10Suppress

Use the Suppress subpanel to "Turn off" points in the model geometry. The points are not deleted, but function as if that had been (they are ignored when meshing).

Panel Inputs

Input

Action

at cursor: point

Select the single point to suppress.

multiple points: points

Select multiple points to suppress.

save as free points

Retain all of the points, instead of discarding (deleting) the ones that are not vertex points.

breakangle

Points whose adjacent edges deviate from a straight line by more than this angle will not be suppressed.

expand-green-10Replace

Use the Replace subpanel to move one point to another, combining them into a single point.

Panel Inputs

Input

Action

moved points

Click the point that you wish to move

retained points

Click the retained point that you wish the first point to combine with.

The selected moved point moves automatically to the same location of the retained point, and the model geometry (such as edges) adjusts appropriately.

expand-green-10Release

Use the Release subpanel to "release" vertices so that they become free, unattached points, and any shared (green) edges that they were attached to the point become free (red) edges.

Panel Inputs

Input

Action

at cursor: point

Click a vertex point in the model’s geometry.

The point releases its associated shared edges.

expand-green-10Project

Use the Project subpanel to move free points to an existing surface, line, and so on.

Panel Inputs

Input

Action

points to edges: points

Select the points you wish to project.

point to edges: lines

Select the edges to which you wish to project the chosen points.

points to surfs: points

Select the points you wish to project.

points to surfs: surfs

Select the surfaces to which you wish project the chosen points.

distance tolerance

Points will not be projected if the lines or surfaces are further than this distance away.

angle tolerance

This is the minimum angle allowed between an existing vertex, the point being projected, and the projected point

internal points onto its surfs: surfs / points

Use the switch to choose between selecting surfs or points.

If you choose points, pick the desired points on your model or use the extended entity selection menu.  The selected points will be projected to each edge of their associated surface when you click project.
If you choose surfs, pick the desired surface on your model or use the extended entity selection menu.  All internal points on that surface will be projected to each of the surface’s edges when you click project.

hmtoggle_arrow1Command Buttons

The following action buttons appear throughout the subpanels:

Button

Action

replace

On the replace subpanel, this button performs the point replacement.

project

On the project subpanel, this button performs the point projection.

reject

Undoes the most recent point edit operation.

return

Exits the panel.
