SS-T: 1000 Geometry Import

Import materials from CAD files.

Purpose

SimSolid performs meshless structural analysis that works on full featured parts and assemblies, is tolerant of geometric imperfections, and runs in seconds to minutes. In this tutorial, you will do the following:
  • Learn how to specify metadata attributes for materials and import materials from CAD files.

Model Description

The following geometry file is needed for this tutorial:
  • grapple-v1_assembly.asm.3

Specify Metadata Attribute

Identify a metadata attribute and add to the database.

  1. Identify the metadata attribute for the material property.

    Figure 1.
  2. In the main window, click Settings > Geometry import settings

    Figure 2.
  3. Select the Import materials check box.
  4. Under Custom metadata attributes, enter the attribute.

    Figure 3.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Verify that a material with the name STEEL (not case sensitive) is available in SimSolid.
    1. In the main window, click Settings > Material database.
    2. In the dialog, select Edit current.
    3. In the file explorer, browse to the SimSolid material database file and click Open.
    4. Look for the STEEL attribute in the Edit material database dialog.

      Figure 4.
If the name string matches with existing name in SimSolid Material database, corresponding material properties will be applied. Otherwise, a message is prompted to notify material properties are not found when you import the geometry file.

Import Geometry

  1. Open a new SimSolid session.
  2. Click the (Import from file) icon.

    Figure 6.
  3. In the Open geometry files dialog, choose grapple-v1_assembly.asm.3.
  4. Click Open.
The assembly will load in the modeling window. STEEL is applied to the parts.
