Compensate Die for Springback

Adjust the die to counter the known springback in a formed shape.

After running a springback analysis, you can apply the die compensation feature, also known as springback compensation, to counter the springback effect after forming. During this process, the formed part affected by springback is measured against a reference part, and the die is modified to counter the difference between the two parts. To control how the die is modified, you can add up to three fixture points to preserve the existing design at those points and shift compensation elsewhere on the die.
  1. From the Run History, select a run that includes a springback analysis.
  2. From the Tryout ribbon, select Compensate.
  3. On the model, select a reference part, then click to confirm. If you do not select a reference part, the die of the preceding forming operation is selected by default. In the Analysis Results, view Compensate Distance, which shows the magnitude of deviation of the springback part from the reference part.
    Note: Compensate Distance gives a preview of the amount of compensation that will be applied on the tools in the reverse direction during springback compensation.
  4. Optional: On the model, select up to three fixture points.
    The springback part is repositioned based on the defined fixture points, and the compensated distance is recalculated.
  5. On the guide bar, click Compensate.
    The software generates a mesh-based stl file of the compensated die and loads it into the current session. A list of the compensated tools and mesh alternatives is available in the tree of the Model Browser.
Tip: Die Compensation is generally an iterative process. For best results, each time you apply the die compensation process, review the results of the compensated die for negative draft. In the Model Browser, toggle among compensated dies for comparison; choose the option that best suits your design and build needs. See Change the Part Alternative for more information.
