Parameters, Auto Parameterization and Actions

Parameters define the subset of data to be retrieved from the source repository and displayed in target visualizations.  Unlike filtering, parameterized datasets only return the data appropriate to the set parameter value, and consequently are important when working with large datasets.  A filtered dataset would retrieve the whole dataset across the network, and then hold the this dataset in memory, filtering it and then displaying the filtered subset.

Parameters are entered with default values in the Data Table specification.  These default values are modified through either:

• Auto-Parameterization

• Navigation Actions

• Default values set outside of the workbook

These changes to parameter values can be limited to the selected dashboard, or can alternatively update all dashboards in a workbook.
