Licensing

The license agreement to operate the Altair Accelerator software is enforced by either a simple license key file or a floating license server, powered by the Reprise License Manager (RLM).

There are two main components of Altair Accelerator that require license tokens to operate: vovserver and vovtasker. See below to determine which licensing method is appropriate for your specific installation.

License Key File

A fixed license key file is typically used for simple installations of Monitor and Accelerator because it eliminates the need to setup and manage a separate license daemon. This results in a simpler installation and greater reliability. However, if multiple instances of either product will exist, each instance will require its own key file, and there is no ability to share and balance licenses between the instances. In this situation, a floating license server may be more appropriate.

Important: License key files are not used with FlowTracer.

Floating License Server

If a license key file is not appropriate, a floating RLM server will be required to enable the software. RLM-based licensing allows for host-based sharing of licenses, as well as the ability to balance licenses between multiple instances of the software. The current RLM-based licensing implementation is referred to as Enterprise Licensing. Customers upgrading from older versions of Altair Accelerator software may be using a deprecated implementation and will need to contact Altair Accelerator to receive a new license.

Enterprise Licensing
With enterprise licensing, the vovtasker gets its licensing from the vovserver as opposed to communicating directly with the RLM server. This results in less load on the RLM license server, increasing scalability and reliability over the now-deprecated tasker-direct licensing. Enterprise licensing also allows for the balancing of licenses between multiple instances of Altair Accelerator software.
Deprecated tasker-Direct Licensing
With this licensing, the vovtasker communicates directly with RLM to get its licenses. This has been shown to overwhelm RLM in large installations. Customers upgrading from older versions of Altair Accelerator software may be using this implementation and will need to contact Altair to receive a new license.
